Call for Proposal (CFP) for Collaborative Research Project between National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (TAIWAN TECH) and Tokushima University (TU) - July 2024 to June 2025

  1. Purpose and Applicant Qualification

TAIWAN TECH and TU have agreed to conduct a mutual collaboration to aim at promoting their research work and achievements to the international academic and industrial societies.

As such, researchers from both universities are encouraged to submit proposals for collaborative research projects. By definition, any collaborative research project should be conducted by researchers and personnel from both TAIWAN TECH and TU.
Applications for the current grant will not be accepted under either circumstance:

(1) Previous conducted collaborative research project (excluding the 202
3 collaborative research project) is not completed or the final report is not submitted yet.

(2) No associated SCI, SSCI, or A&HCI papers are published within two years after the completion of the previous conducted collaborative research project (excluding the 202
3 collaborative research project).

  1. Assessment and Selection Committee

An Assessment and Selection Committee (ASC), which consists of deans and executives from TAIWAN TECH and TU, supervises the procedures for the review, assessment, and the selection of the proposed research projects. The ASC is also in charge of the allocation of funding to the approved research projects.

  1. Topics for collaborative research

The research topics are not limited to any category.

  1. Structure of research team

Each research team should consist of one principal investigator (PI) from TAIWAN TECH and one PI from TU. Inclusion of students and other personnel is optional.

  1. Constraints on the use of funding

The funding to each research team is limited to 500,000 NTD (or equivalently, 2,200,000 JPY). The funding cannot be used as the personal income of the PIs. The funding can be used for travel, equipment, consumable products, personal income to students, and miscellaneous expenses.

  1. Application procedures

To apply for the research grant, an application form and a project proposal must be submitted to:

-- Office of Research and Development (ORD), by the TAIWAN TECH counterpart

-- Faculty of Science and Technology(FST), by the TU counterpart

Please notice that both the submission to TAIWAN TECH and the submission to TU must be performed. The applicants can find the application form in the attachment of this CFP announcement.

  1. Application deadline

The application should be filed no later than May 24, 2024.

  1. Notification on approved projects

On June 27, 2024, the applicants will be notified regarding the status of their project, including whether it is approved and (if approved) the amount of funding.

  1. Joint Workshop and 2025 IFAT Conference

- Project PI has to participate in the Joint Research Workshop on August at TU, and the IFAT on March, 2025 at Taiwan Tech.

  1. Reports

A final report should be submitted to the ASC before June 30, 2025.

  1. Paper submission and publication

At least a paper derived from this collaborative research should be published by June 30, 2027. Personnel from both TAIWAN TECH and TU should appear in the list of authors of the afore-mentioned papers.

  1. Review criteria for Proposal for Joint Research Project

(1) Qualification of research team

    • Does the joint research team, combined with relevant TAIWAN TECH/TU staff expertise, possess the breadth and depth of skill/knowledge to successfully perform the proposed research and drive progress as outlined in the proposal?
    • Will the research team commit themselves to carry out this project?

(2) Originality and scientific/technological merits

    • How important is the proposed research project to advancing knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields?
    • How important is it to developing new technologies within its own field or across different fields?
    • To what extent does the proposed activity suggest and explore creative and original concepts?

(3) Quality of project and appropriateness of method

    • How well conceived and organized is the proposed research project?
    • Does the proposal describe the goal and expected problems clearly?
    • Are the proposed methods appropriate for solving the potential (or even existing) problems?

(4) Expected achievement and contribution

  • Will the proposed research advance understanding or development of issues pertaining to various fields of science and engineering?
  • Will it generate results that enhance the academic status of TAIWAN TECH and TU (for example, by publishing papers in high impact-factor journals)?
  • Will it help in advancing the industry of Japan and/or Taiwan?
