Call for Proposal 2025-2026 Taiwan Tech & Kyutech

Call for Proposal for Joint Research Program 2025-2026 between National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech)

  1. Preamble

Since 2017 Taiwan Tech and Kyutech have been jointly operating the Joint Research Program which Taiwan Tech provides research fund to Taiwanese teams and Kyutech does it to Japanese teams. The Program has been one of the major contributions to increase the number and the quality of joint research and joint papers for both universities in the international academic society. After 7 years of the operation, Taiwan Tech and Kyutech have decided to continue this Program but with new ideas of operation to optimize the cost, to maximize the outcomes, and to pursue new collaborative opportunities. Faculty member of Taiwan Tech and Kyutech are hereby invited to submit proposals for their joint research projects in accordance with the following details.

  1. Duration

The duration of each joint research project is 24 months from January 2025 until December 2026.

The project period granted is not extendable.

  1. Academic domains

There is no limitation to academic domain / research fields.

  1. Eligibility to apply
  1. Applicants must be full-time faculty members who will hold “full-time” status until the end of the project.
  2. Priority of application shall be from Taiwan Tech and Kyutech partners that had no prior or on-going projects under this program in the past.
  3. Partners from Taiwan Tech and Kyutech that had collaborated before can still apply, but they must prove that their proposal is different from their previous project(s), subject to the final approval of Taiwan Tech-Kyutech Joint Assessment and Selection Committee (ASC).
  4. Applicants who have failed to complete their projects, or fulfil the specified key performance indicators (publication, talent, securing follow-on external grants, intellectual property), or any other terms as designated in the past project’s award letter, will not be eligible to apply.

5. Aim of the Program

Applicants are expected to understand that the aim of the Joint Research Program is to enhance international collaborative performance in joint research, research-based post-graduate student exchanges, and innovation; and to increase the number of joint publications, produce high quality papers, provide post-graduate students valuable opportunities by joining the international projects, extend the project result to external grant project, and to expand international collaborative networks.

6. Joint Research Team

Each joint research team must be composed of one Principal Investigator (PI), research member(S), and post-graduate student(s) from each university. All of who must have full time position at their university. A third party must not be a part of joint research team.

7. Third party

Due to the IP protection, the Export Control Laws and Regulations, and so forth, a third party cannot be join any project. Joint research teams shall not invite a third party to join their projects.

8. The Joint Assessment and Selection Committee

The Joint Assessment and Selection Committee (“ASC”) assesses, selects and evaluates the projects and funding in the selection meeting, the mid-term report meeting and the final report meeting. ASC will be co-chaired by Dean, Office of Research & Development of Taiwan Tech and Vice President (for International) of Kyutech and four other committee members from each university appointed by the Chairman in accordance with the Agreement on Co-funding Research Program.

9. Code of Ethics

Joint research projects must comply with the code of ethics set forth by each university. All proposed projects are deemed to have complied with the relevant code or law of ethics. Ethical approval shall not be the main reason for project delay or disruption.  The ASC has the authority to terminate the project with immediate effect upon discovery of any ethical breaches.

10. Project Funding

10.1 Funding Allocation

The maximum amount of funding per project is up to NTD 315,000 to Taiwan Tech team and JPY 1,500,000 for Kyutech team for 2 years (NTD157,500 per year and JPY750,000 per year). The funding amount for Taiwan Tech team and Kyutech team shall be equal amount but in different currency. The Joint ASC evaluates the submitted Proposals and decide the amount of each project and is expected to accept 5 or more projects.

10.2 Project Funding Guideline

The project funds shall be used for travel costs, research equipment/material/supplies costs, consumable costs, remuneration to students, and miscellaneous expenses all of which are DIRECTLY for the project ONLY. Any expenses which are not directly related to the project such as, but not limited to, domestic or international conferences, supplies and consumables, etc. MUST NOT be used from this Project funds.

Kyutech teams shall use project fund in accordance with Kyutech’s rules and regulations and Taiwan Tech teams shall use project fund in accordance with Taiwan Tech’s rules and regulations.

10.3 Compulsory Meetings

It is COMPULSORY for Principal Investigators (PIs) to travel for face-to-face / physical Mid-Term Progress Report Meeting and for face-to-face / physical Final Report / Exiting Meeting which will be scheduled to be held at the same time of any International Joint research workshop which will be hosted alternatively in Taiwan and in Japan annually. The research members are also recommended to participate physically or virtually.

11. Contents of the Proposals and the template

The full proposals shall not be longer than 10 pages, and should have the following structure:

- Title of proposed project and summary of main features.

- Description of the project – 4 pages max, including

- Overall goal and ambition

- Proposed milestones

- Expected outcome: project work, joint innovation projects, expected scientific results, expected high-impact publications, possible joint post-graduate student supervision, extension of the project result to external grant project as a continuation of the collaboration, etc.

-Short description of both teams, including short bio (10 lines) of lead partner on each side, and list of other colleagues involved, explanation of why they are the right people to work on this topic, expected benefit of the collaboration for Taiwan Tech and for Kyutech.

- When appropriate (this is not a prerequisite): description of existing work between the two teams, including student exchanges, publications, joint supervision of Master or PhD students, etc.

- Proposed budget

Both teams are expected to discussed and work together to write Proposals and finalize them, and submit the same proposal to each home university.

The common template will be provided, and the Proposal must be written in English.

13. Submission Deadline

The Proposals must be submitted by no later than July 31st 2024

14. Notification of Result

Selection result will be notified to the applicants by 30th November 2024  

15. Kick-off meeting

Teams whose proposal are accepted must hold a Kick-off meeting by each within January 2025 and the PIs must make a report of the meeting to the ASC immediately after holding the Kick-off meeting.

16. Deliverables

The PIs of the Joint research teams must submit papers to the academic journals which are listed in JCR (Q1-Q4) within 6 months after the project is completed and at least one paper based on this research project must be published within 2 years after end of their projects. The PIs must EXPLICITLY PROVIDE THE STATEMENT WHICH RESEARCHERS MUST PUT IN THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT SECTION OF THE PAPER.

The PIs are also expected to apply for any external grant projects within 2 years after end of their projects.
